so i've been looking and looking for that perfect rug for under the cocktail table in the living room. a few have caught my eye ... what do you think?
above is the easton in camel from angela adams. i like it. it's simple, yet still has the modern feel i'm looking for. it won't compete with the painting we bought in new york or the outdoor carpet on the balcony. (you can see both while sitting on the couch.) plus it's perfect with the tiles i'm coveting for the backsplash in the kitchen. i'm going to try to see this in person in the next few days. dwr carries angela adams, but not this model. i'm hoping space or stanton home furnishings comes through!
other eye catchers ...
- this houndstooth gem from neiman marcus. it's so inexpensive (!!!), i'd have money to burn after the fact.
- the hairhide or modern zebra, also from neiman marcus (they really have great prices on rugs at neimans ... who knew?).
- this woodblock from crate and barrel (click on room views for best view). i like it because it will add some texture without really changing the overall look of the room. thoughts?

Hi Holly,
Rugs are tricky. I cant tell you how many i've had my poor husband shlepp in and out of here. But from my experience you really need to see them in your space, even for a few days and be prepared to return. I like the angela adams rug but might not be as ed friendly as the other choices. The modern zebra rug would be fun to try. It might really add some pop to your already gorgeous space. good luck, k
i'd be game for the zebra, i'm just worried about tripper. yikes! you are right ... rugs ARE tricky. i wish i could hire an interior designer just to consult on that one piece!
Have you seen this rug called fern suede by anglea adams http://www.angelaadams.com/studio_indrug.php?cw=32&ptrn=113
I like the blue and the fern pattern is reflected in your pillows. Didnt you mention your dinner plates were blue? A little more pop than camel rug but not quite as strong as zebra. Might be worth a try. k
My opinion, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, is that the Angela Adams one you pictured is too "safe". I've seen your place on Apartment Therapy and I think you could use a little za-za-zoo (as Carrie Bradshaw would say!) I lurve that zebra print one! Don't worry too much about the husband, my guess is he respects your design choices and would probably go along with it. Just ask! Pottery Barn and West Elm both have zebra rugs right now - check out their sites for room pics.
When a rug looks kind of crazy when you see the whole thing, you have to remember it looks different when it's under your coffee table and working with all of the other things in the room. A rug with an interesting print like this might just be the thing to pull everything together. The Botanical Rug at West Elm, in espresso with a nice floral design on one side, is another attractive option.
jennifer ... i know, i know! thank you for the nudge away from the safe choice and for the little carrie bradshaw voice now inside my head. i will go over to pottery barn and west elm this weekend to check out your suggestions. i'm not usually afraid of taking a little risk, it's just that rugs are so expensive i'd hate to make a mistake there.
Wow, I'm shocked by the prices on the Neiman Marcus rugs - much, much lower than I would ever expect! It's less than the Pottery Barn zebra rug. I think they are equally pretty - more a question of do you want black and cream or brown and cream (either would work with your stuff).
I am working on adding za-za-zoo to my place too. It's easy to be safe, but then you finish decorating and you realize something is missing. I think it makes the most sense to go neutral on your big pieces. You've done that with your couch, slipper chair, coffee table. Very smart - that way you can use those pieces for a looong time and add interest with pillows, throws, candles, art, etc. BUT (a big but!) I think it is okay to have one non-neutral, non-"safe" major purchase (by major I mean several hundred dollars). For me, it is going to be a brightly colored armchair, my sofa and side chairs are neutral. I think it will feel extravagant because I usually err on the safe side.
You already have most of your furnishings in place, a WOW! rug will bring all of your neutral pieces up a notch.
If you are near a Storehouse, I see they also have a nice wool zebra rug. Check out some of their other rugs too - the Jordan Sky Rug and Kaelin Breeze rugs are a totally different vibe from the zebra rug but I think they would go with your colors too.
Have fun and when you pick a rug be sure to post it!
